A quiet haven in a slightly scruffy but very conveniently located area of San Jose. Rooms were clean and spacious. Breakfast included a number of options, all tasty, especially the spicy sauce and cake, although obviously not together. The reception staff were excellent, very friendly, very chatty and by helpful.
Rooms were a little dated.
Compared to the other inexpensive hotels in the miserable city of San Jose, this hotel has an attractive old-fashioned look both outside and inside, decent small rooms, and an acceptable breakfast. I use it as a place to stay after arriving at the airport late and before taking the bus to the countryside early the next day.
It is next door to a commuter train station so don't plan on sleeping after 5:00 AM on weekdays...you will get tooted. If you are in route like me, that is probably no problem. But, if you are in the city for an evening's entertainment and plan on staying out late and sleeping past 5:00 AM, choose another hotel.
Friendly helpful staff. Nice owner. The hotel itself was beautiful inside. Good complimentary breakfast with eggs, rice, beans, fresh fruit, pastries, coffee and juice.
Dark staircases at night and the proximity to the train tracks and train whistle.
Decor and price, jacuzzi
Futon couch, uncomfortable sleeping arrangement
Architecture, friendly staff, clean room.
Just about everything especially the staff, the bar and food
Nothing but they could use a little updating like new mattresses
Stayed twice. Good value for the money, good staff, good location, nothing to complain about!
We loved the architecture and the wonderful art work. We wish the bar had stayed open. We were presented with free drink coupons, the bar had closed 5 minutes earlier.
Reasonable room and price point, good location just off the main avenue in San Jose. Within walking distance to most of the main city centre museums. We upgraded to a suite on arrival.
The bathroom could have done with some modernisation (ok though). As noted in other reviews, it is close to the railway line in San Jose, and so there is noise from trains passing and hooting at cars crossing the railways lines in front of them! Didn't really bother us, but maybe it would if you were staying for more than a day or two. No safe in the room for valuables.
Service was fantastic.
They were unable to get the wireless internet to work on the second and third floor for the duration of my visit. Their smoking area for guests is only about 3 meters from the outdoor dining area. They should consider moving the smoking area away from the outdoor dining area.
Just ok. ....., showerhead fell off, permanent puddle of water beneath bathroom sink, noisy heaing/ cooling system, bathroom light continually flickered pn and off despite being switched off at the wall, internet droped out as soon as you left the bedroom not even working in the adjoining bathroom, no spare powerpoints to charge phones
A lovely mansion 3 minutes away from the National Museum and souvenir market. Very comfortable. You feel safe once inside the hotel. There is always a security person on the look out.
The lady who "welcomed" us was extremely cold and unkind. We told her we had a reservation, no hello, no smile, no eye contact no nothing!!!! She started to smile and open up when I paid cash and grabbed the notes! We never saw her again, the other members of staff were ok. My friend got some weird tummy gurgles for a couple of hours after breakfast: should the fruit juices be blamed? We didn't know if we would stay for one or two nights so that first lady told her to let them know at the latest in the morning ,which we did, we eventually wanted to stay for two nights but they gave the room to someone else!!!!!! We took our things in the morning and went to another hotel right down the street!
The room was large and breakfast was included and pretty good. Hard to find since there are very few signs in the city, lots of one ways. The location is very scary. Not safe to walk around especially at night. there is no decent shopping around or anything worth touring. I recommend staying outside of San Jose. It is a big city with big problems...needs cleaning, police, infrastructure. Could be a beautiful city if the govt took care of the people and city.
Nice breakfast, friendly staff. We were given a free upgrade to the honeymoon suite :)
The hotel backs right onto a train line and the trains sound their horn continuosly as they pass through as early as 4.45am and up to 10.00pm.
Beautifully refurnished old building (1900 I think) Location was excellent 1 block from pedestrian avenue and national museum. It felt like safe neighborhood. Excellent restaurant with Swiss chef. Also the breakfast was good. Free secure parking . Service was excellent too and friendly staff (especially Walter). Tour desk helped us to arrange a trip to Tortuguero and got us a very good price.
It's all good as far as I'm concerned!
